For this play about new neighbors in Oakland who are painfully aware of their own privilege, the artistic director and I agreed the these characters were the kind of people who take pictures of their food. He felt my faux Instagram concept was might be confused for an actual IG pic. Instead, I scouted greenery-- thinking I'd use it as a texture-- in idyllic Pasadena, California. I may have done a little dance when I saw this picket fence.
